Hercules Today:
Sword & Sandal for the Soul
Last night's movie was Hercules, Samson and Ulysses. I have always seen it as a sequel of sorts to Hercules and Hercules Unchained; and very much in the spirit of Hercules: The Princess of Troy.
The epic starts off with Hercules and his wife Iole dwelling in the kingdom of Laertes, father of Ulysses. The island-nation of Ithaka is plagued by a sea-monster and, much to the chagrin of their lady-loves, Hercules and Ulysses boldly volunteer to confront the terror from the deep.
The heroes and their crew seek and then confront the sea-beast, but are shipwrecked in the process, and find themselves washed ashore in the land of the Philistines.
They are assured that the Philistines will help the Greeks return home... but only if Hercules helps them catch a pesky outlaw named Samson.
The titans meet, do battle and, of course, become friends - and then the fun really starts! Expect lots of muscle-flexing, ancient fighting and the toppling of many pillars, statues and cyclopean stones.
There's an unexpected, yet timely last-minute rescue, and much treachery on the part of Delilah and the Philistine king. And though they remain nameless and uncelebrated, a handful of pigeons actually help save the day in this Peplum adventure.
The lesson I gleaned whilst enjoying, then contemplating this movie: Always trust your impulses and never lose sight of your goals.
