Totem Quest: Path of the Lion
An Age of Heroes Initiative

In mythic times great heroes, including Hercules, fought wild beasts that threatened the human communities they were sworn to protect.

Hercules Fights The Nemean Lion, written by Gary Jeffrey and illustrated by Terry Riley, tells the tale of the Glory of Hera's first two Labors. Bookended by a brief overview of our hero's life and legend, the tale unfolds in comic-book fashion: colorfully, with sound effects and lots of action.

After defeating the Nemean Lion, whose hide was impervious to weapons created by human hands or found in nature, Hercules used his antagonist's claw to skin him and claim his pelt. The pelt was proof that he accomplished his mission and he proudly wore it as armor forever afterward.

As his second Labor, Hercules confronted the draconic Hydra. He triumphed with the help of his nephew Iolaus.

This work will appeal primarily to younger readers and serves as a good introduction to Greek Mythology and the legend of Hercules.

Dragons, if the ever were, are certainly no more. And lions, which once challenged the mightiest of mortals, are now fighting for their very existence. Perhaps our current task is to save these proud and noble beasts from the fate that claimed the dragons and removed them from our world.

When my wife enquired what I desired to be gifted in celebration of the Birth of Hercules (Winter Solstice 2015), the first thing that came to mind was this beautiful bronze polyresin cast of Hercules Wrestling the Nemean Lion. I like it so much that is serves as the centerpiece of my altar, representing my operant archetype, my primary totem, the Solar Orb and the Element of Fire. Distributed, and perhaps crafted, by Pacific Gifts (or Atlantic Collectibles), this was the perfect present. Thank you O Wonderful Wife!
