Temenos: Mermaids

D.J. Conway is a prolific, and very creative, guide to all matters mythic and magickal. In the past she's introduced us to the spirituality of barbarian cultures, revealed the hidden secrets of the ancients, and has taught us how to interact with creatures from fantasy, folklore and legend. She's also taken us on tours of fantastic realms beyond our own.

I was delighted to discover that she'd finally taken on the realm of Elemental Water.

First Ms.Conway treats us to a sample of global lore concerning the Mer-folk and spells out the ways in which these entities can assist those who befriend them.

D.J. then provides us with a detailed bestiary of watery beings - spirits and beasts ranging from the elemental to the totemic - with advice on finding and dealing with each one. Undines, like other astral denizens, have interacted with humanity throughout the entirety of our earthly sojourn. The chronicles of our history together are preserved in our folklore and mythology.

These beings are often mischievous, and can be extremely dangerous. Caution must be taken when contacting or encountering them. In the late 70's I had an encounter with a mermaid off the coast of Cape Cod. Despite all I knew, I was totally unprepared for the intensity of that particular paranormal experience. So... heed the warnings well if you would tread this path.

Magickal Mermaids and Water Creatures concludes with meditations, rituals and spells for the magickal practitioner. You are also taught how to interact with aquatic entities through your active imagination, a safe and effective magickal technique.

This tome is an excellent introduction to obsure marine lore, stamped with D.J. Conway's unique style. Whether you're an occultist, a fledgeling folklorist, a fantasy author looking for fresh ideas, a gamer looking for a way to juice up your campaign... or are simply intrigued by mermaids and other strange creatures of the deep, this is a great place to start your quest.
