Temenos: Tenafly Time Portals

And lo, Mount Olympus guided my steps toward Tenafly and therein I currently reside. What mythic mission could this move reveal?

Tenafly, originally 'Tiene Vly', literally means 'Ten Swamps' in Dutch.

In Greek Mythology swamps were considered to be Gateways to the Underworld and other unearthly realms. These Plutonian Gates, as they were sometimes called, were often protected by monstrous guardians, such as the Lernean Hydra. Ancient Astronaut theorists now believe these portals to have been StarGates, or artificial wormholes, bridging distant realms and time periods.

The number ten was considered to signify Completeness, or Eternity, by the Ancients. It also symbolized the divinity Aion, or Kronos, known to us moderns as Father Time.

Aion's iconography conveyed the cyclical nature of time through such symbols as a coiled serpent or a snake devouring its own tail.  He was often associated with Cybele, the goddess of the Gates as per the Ancient Astronaut theorists.

Could Tenafly, a picture-postcard town in Bergen County, actually be the key that unlocks the mysteries of space, time and other dimensions?

I was determined to explore this riddle and see where my quest led me. And thus the adventure began...

Gaia's Gates

Many Astral Explorers believe that the StarGates are tied to the constellations in the Wheel of the Zodiac, and to the Planetary Powers that rule them.

Thus we are lead to the Labors of Hercules, which share exactly the same associations..

Hercules was originally to be assigned ten Labors, but two were discounted, thus bringing his total to twelve.

Both of the dismissed Labors dealt with water. As stated above, the Swamp at Lernea was a Gate to an OtherWorld, and was guarded by the Hydra. The stables of Augeas were cleared of their accumulated filth by diverting two rivers. Some say that this Labor was symbolic of clearing the accumulated silt deposits left by the rivers themselves.

Either way, if these two muddy-water Labors signify Tenafly itself, with its Ten Swamps, or the terrestrial Gates that can be accessed locally, we are left with an elegant system of time and space travel that supports both ancient and modern conceptions of our Solar System'.
