Mythic Adventure: Our History

I have been running Interactive Mythic Adventures since my childhood in the 1960s and Role Playing Games since the dawn of the hobby in the mid-1970s.

Since the mid-1980s I have been running them, for all age groups, in a variety of private, commercial, institutional and community settings.

The latest incarnation of Mythic Adventure launched as a Special Event in the Hawley Public Library's 2005 Summer Reading Program, themed: Dragons, Dreams & Daring Deeds. After the game, Athena and I gave away books and gaming supplies. Our challenge was to encourage kids to read more and to increase their regular visits to our local library.

After a few more Special Events, Mythic Adventure became a monthly, then weekly, activity at the library. We joined the After-School Adventures With Dungeons & Dragons program and, after incorporating as a 501(c), became an online charity on a popular book trading site. This allowed us to give away a lot more books after each session.

The programs ran there continuously from 2005 to 2012 as well as in other locations including the Newfoundland Public Library, Northampton Community College's Family Literacy Program, the Wayne County YMCA and the Barbarian Bazaar's Athenaeum.

We also got involved with other Literacy initiatives in Northeastern Pennsylvania, most notably First Book Wayne-Pike and Wayne-Pike Adult Literacy. In 2010 we ran Fighting Words, a Live Action Role Playing Game (LARP) and Gladiatorial Spelling Bee as a Fundraiser for these local literacy programs.

When we relocated to Northwestern New Jersey, our Mythic Adventure programs ran as Special Events at the Woven Roots Festival, Practical Magick and in private groups before finding a new home at Strengthen our Sisters, where we ran weekly from September 2013 to August 2014.

And now we are in Northeastern New Jersey, still running Mythic Adventure and our other Mythic programs in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area. If you live in or near Bergen County, we would like to invite you to join us on our mythic journeys! Mythic Adventure is now available through various Recreation and Community Education programs and can be experienced for FREE through the Tenafly Public Library and the Cresskill Public Library.
