The Theban Hercules: A Solar Hero

Like many other Solar Heroes, the Hercules of Thebes (born Alkides) is strongly associated with lions.

And, again, like many other Solar Heroes, he is considered to be an exemplary archer.

His many adventures celebrate the Sun's journey across the sky and through the Houses of the Zodiac.

The Theban Hercules challenged the Olympian Sun God Apollo for his Delphic Tripod.

He also challenged the Titan Sun God Helios for his Solar Goblet and used it to travel to the Sunset Lands.

In the West he won the Cattle of the Sun and the Golden Apples of Immortality, also sacred to the Sun.

As the new Sun God, he was initiated into the Eternal Mysteries, descended into the Underworld and emerged triumphant.

At his death he ascended to the Heavens after being purified in a Sacred Fire atop a mountain.

His work of bridging Heaven and Earth finally at an end, he gained immortality among the stars as the constellation Hercules.
