Herodotus was a Greek historian who broke away from the Homeric tradition and developed a new way of collecting and understanding past events and their influence on the present time.

His life-work, The Histories (also known as The History, The Inquiry and The Researches) is the earliest example of Greek prose to remain intact.

Though he is best remembered as the Father of History, others have called him the Father of Lies due to the nature of some of the tales he gathered and interpreted.

You can access a translation of The Histories, and learn more about Herodotus, via the Menu Links to the right.

Lest you be tempted to dismiss Herodotus, know that our modern methods of historical inquiry and narrative are derived from his foundational work.
